Mesothelioma Treatment

If you have mesothelioma, you may be tempted to think that it's hopeless and fall into patterns of depression. But please don't think there's no hope. While it's a very serious disease, the long term prospects are constantly improving with advances in medical technology. And even today, treatments can be more successful than you might expect.

If you're looking at stage I or II mesothelioma, things look relatively good. In that case, treatment via conventional therapy in conjunction with radiation or (possibly and) chemotherapy work well. They have a 75% chance of extending the life span of the patient by at least five years. This is considered remission, because the time span is so long. Of course, the figures vary depending on how early the cancer is caught and what stage it's in, so just take these numbers of a rough guide.

By comparison, surgery alone has only a 16% chance of achieving the same result (remission, or extending the patient's life span by five years. That just shows that a treatment plan needs to be formulated holistically, rather than people becoming overly dependent on any one aspect of it.

In general, the course of treatment will be guided by the current developmental stage of the disease. While it's all called "mesothelioma," the cancer really does appear different in different stages. Its behavior is determined by various factors such as the unbelievably long period between the time of asbestos exposure and the time that the disease takes effect, any invasion to the pleural cavity and the organs contained therein, and the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity which favors local metastasis via exfoliated cells. Now isn't that a mouthful? But that's how complicated this disease can be.

It is never advisable for a person to try to base all their medical decisions on things read on the internet. That's not to say that the internet is not a valuable resource. On the contrary, it's probably far more valuable than all your friends put together. But because so much depends on the particulars of your situation, you should always consult with a competent physician and see what course of treatment they recommend in your specific case.
