Apparently, this was going to be a really long conversation. I took a deep breath and prepared for more. If there was a chance I could walk away being convinced of this stuff, I was all for it. I said to Tuck, "OK, then. Let's hear it."
"Alright, as for the Mayan creation date, we really don't know why it is what it is. And yes, it may have been completely arbitrary. But the calendar you know and love is based on an arbitrary date as well."
"What?" Did I hear him right? "I know everyone has their own beliefs, and I don't particularly consider myself a Christian, but for people who are, I don't know what date would be less arbitrary than the birth of your Lord and Savior, or at least his incarnation on Earth."
"Yeah, but the thing is, the Gregorian calendar doesn't start from the birth of Christ. Actually, we don't know when he was born, because the Bible gives two different stories. The Gospel of Matthew says he was born before Herod the Great's death in 4 B.C. But the Gospel of Luke puts his birth at 6 A.D., at the time of the Census of Quirinius."
"Wow, that's a big discrepancy," I remarked. "Come to think of it, I remember hearing a long time ago that he was born in 4 B.C. I was surprised at first, because I always thought the calendar started ticking from his birth. But I thought that at least we knew the right date. 4 B.C. and 6 A.D. are ten years apart! No wait, that's nine years, right? Forgot about the missing 0. Anyway, Matthew and Luke are almost right next to each other in the New Testament, and his birth date changed by nine years or more from one book to the other."
