My stomach turned a little at the thought of that. I've never understood why people could switch off their brain and totally abandon what makes them human, all for something that's nothing more than a wild guess.
"So yeah," Tuck went on, "people were wrong about 1984, and they were wrong about 2000, and they were wrong about countless other dates. But it doesn't matter how many times they were wrong. They only have to be right once."
I never went for that kind of logic. I said, "Sure, the million wrong predictions won't matter when we're finally facing the one they actually get right. But I don't think that's tonight. What's happening tonight isn't anything new. It's part of the same Mayan thing that didn't happen when people predicted it last year. Now they're just picking a different date for the same failed prediction. Can't they just admit that if they were wrong before, then they can't reasonably expect to be right now?"
"Well, a lot of them weren't wrong before," Tuck replied. "Most of them have always thought that 3114 B.C. was the correct creation date, and therefore 2012 is the year to be concerned about. The confusion may have arisen because we often talked about the Mayan creation date in terms of the astronomical calendar."
I couldn't believe this. "Wait a minute, now we're adding a third calendar to the mix? No wonder people get confused about dates!"
