"That's not really an accurate picture of what we do, Tuck. And in case you hadn't noticed, there are an awful lot of us. Maybe we see something you don't. Maybe you should join us."
"Um, yeah, I'm gonna just keep doing what I do, thank you very much." I guess Tuck just didn't feel that pull towards the practice of mesothelioma law that the rest of us did. His calling hadn't come yet.
"Anyway," Tuck continued, "these people were so intent on seeing the world end, or society crumble, or whatever, that they completely forgot that Nineteen Eighty-Four was just a work of fiction. Even Orwell didn't really believe that 1984 was anything more than a made-up date. A lot of people say that because he wrote the book in 1948, he just flipped the last two digits. But the believers wouldn't be swayed by any of this. They just didn't seem to hear anything that conflicted with their mental model."
"Yeah, and that's the problem with blind faith." I was starting to remember the anger I felt towards these people. "Faith can't coexist with logic. When you open yourself up to faith, rational thought shuts down completely. It doesn't matter how wrong these people are, they'll never be able to admit it, even when the proof is right in front of their face, and visible to everyone who hasn't been infected with their delusions."
Tuck nodded. "I wouldn't put it quite so strongly, but yeah, I agree with you. Blind faith can be a very powerful thing. But whether that power ends up being used for good or evil, it's pretty much a coin toss. There have been far too many cases of people drilling holes in other peoples' skulls, just because they have a different view of who was the successor to Muhammad."
