"You know, I hadn't thought about that," I said. "I guess I was too busy figuring out how to stop them. I don't know if they have a decent survival plan."
"Neither do I," Tuck said. "And that's why I don't know if the human race will become extinct. And even if they survive, their civilization will certainly be very different from ours. Now, part 2 of your question - 'If so, is that OK?' Logically speaking, I can say yes. Extinction is sad, but it's a natural and common process. 99.9% of all species that have ever lived are now extinct. And we all knew that humans would go long before cockroaches. If it happens sooner than expected, it doesn't really matter."
That didn't sound like Tuck. "Do you really think that?" I asked.
"Not really," Tuck admitted. "I'm just trying to rationalize it. And I think that I'm in shock, so I'm having a delayed reaction. I don't think the full impact of this day has sunk in yet."
"That's how I feel too," I said. "As concerned as I am about the human race, at the moment I'm mostly thinking about my own personal regrets."
"Well, I can't relate to you there," Tuck said. "I have no regrets."
"I didn't either," I said. "Until today. Now everything seems so different."
"Oh, you mean like how you're now an expert on choking and torturing people? Yeah, I can imagine how that changes you. I've been meaning to ask you, does that towel thing really work? Does it really pull out their stomach lining?"
