"Part 1 is 'Will the human race become extinct?' Part 2 is 'If so, is that OK?'"

Tuck was silent for a minute as he pondered that. Then he said, "I'd like to give you a good answer, Jack, but I don't think that I can."

"Just try," I said.

"Alright. Will the human race become extinct? I don't know. When I last looked at the monitors a few minutes ago, it looked bad. I didn't see any normal people left. I think that by midnight, everyone who's still alive will be infected. Not just everyone in the building, including us, but everyone around the world. OK, there may be some people here and there who survive by sealing themselves off in survival bunkers. Basically like what we're in now, except airtight to keep out the mesothelioma, and with food and supplies, and maybe with even more secure doors in case these guys are able to break through. But I'm not even sure it's possible to survive that way, especially after Mrityu incarnates. And even the survivors can't live like that forever. So I think that for all intents and purposes, we're looking at practically everyone on Earth being either infected or dead."

I agreed, and I was glad he wasn't trying to sugarcoat it.

Tuck continued. "Now, I wasn't really clear on the post-apocalypse plan, but I'm thinking that Mrityu is going to avoid infecting the people in Morty's group, and they'll survive as they are. As for the infected people, I'm thinking that either they'll all die, or maybe they'll be kept around as slaves, if they can be controlled. Anyway, they'll be so mutated that I don't think we can count them as humans. Let's say that's how it will go down. Does that mean the extinction of the human race? Here's where I have to say I really don't know. When a species is on the verge of extinction, and you're trying to estimate its chances of survival, there are a few things you want to take into consideration. Most obviously, you want to know how many are still alive. Now, I'm not sure that Mrityu is going to hold up his end of the bargain. He might just kill everyone. But let's say he lets his followers survive, and he resurrects Morty to rule them. Will they have enough people left to ensure the survival of the species? Repopulating the Earth is harder than you think."
