I pulled out my phone and flipped it open. Right away, I noticed that something didn't look right. "No signal," I said.
Tuck laughed. "See, that's why I have AT&T," he said. "They have more bars in more places." He took out his phone and looked at the display. "But apparently not here."
"It makes sense," I said. "The steel must not be just in the door, but in all the walls around us. Otherwise, intruders could just break through the walls. We're not going to get a signal through steel."
"Hmmm," Tuck said, "the button under Morty's desk...is there any reason we didn't just try pushing that again?"
It sounded so obvious now, I had no idea why we didn't try it before.
I rushed over to the desk, hoping that the same button that closed the door would also be the one that opened it. But no. Nothing happened.
However, while I was at the desk, I noticed the phone I had unplugged before. To a land line, it didn't matter if we were encased in steel. I quickly plugged it back in and picked up the receiver. This was possibly our last chance to save the world.
No dial tone. Why would the phone line be dead? I didn't know, but I was now officially out of ideas.
"My God," Tuck said. "I'm going to die hatless."
