Tuck woke up with the worst headache of his life. He struggled to lift his head, which felt far heavier than he had ever remembered it. He managed to open his eyes a bit, but saw only blurred images that made no sense to him. He listened to what was happening around him, but heard only voices he didn't recognize, saying words he could barely make out.
He remembered nothing of what had happened to him. Wait, it was coming back to him now. He was with Jack for a while, and then...and then what? He had left...yes, he had stepped out for some fresh air. And now he was somehow here. But where was he? He had no idea. Had he died?
"He's conscious," said one of the voices. "Get the smelling salts."
Someone held a soaking wet towel under Tuck's nose. The effect was immediate. Tuck gasped for breath and snapped his head back fast enough to give himself whiplash.
The voice spoke again. "Ammonium carbonate, Dr. Jones. Mix it with water, and wave it under someone's nose. The solution releases ammonia gas, triggering a sharp inhalation reflex, and taking those who breathe it from the edge of unconsciousness to full alertness, instantly."
It was a man's voice. An old man. After a second, he spoke again. "Ammonia works by irritating the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs. This is a town obsessed with mesothelioma, a cancer of the mesothelium, a membrane that covers most of the internal organs. I find it curious that everyone is obsessed with one membrane, while showing no interest in most of the others. I, on the other hand, have always had a keen interest in all aspects of the body, particularly as they relate to the mind-body-soul connection."
